History, Location & Area

Over the last hundred years, Mission Beach has undergone a compelling evolution. The chronicle of San Diego’s most dynamic coastal community recalls an era when streetcar tracks trailed down Mission Boulevard, and Spreckel’s Mission Beach Amusement Center enchanted tourists; and before that, when Asher’s ephemeral Tent City populated the sand. Yet Mission Beach’s roots expand even further – when Mission Bay was a mess of marshes; and the empty beach gleamed like blank paper, waiting for its history to begin. In the 1800s and early 1900s, Mission Beach was the eye in a tempest of San Diego development.
